SEO + AI search For Joomla 3, 4, 5 and 6

Joomla SEO service for Google and AI search

For Joomla sites that should be bringing in more enquiries. We find what holds your pages back in Google and in AI answers such as ChatGPT search, then fix it inside Joomla: routing, robots.txt, speed, structured data, content. Every change is logged. We build Joomla extensions for a living.

  • Joomla developers since 2016
  • Joomla 3 to 6, any template or page builder
  • About 20 senior hours a month on your site
  • No ranking guarantees, no lock-in after month 3

Joomla problems

Why Joomla sites fall behind in search

Most Joomla sites that slip in search are held back by settings still at their install defaults and by what upgrades and extensions added on top. Here are six faults we find again and again, plus a Cloudflare change from September 2026.

One article, six addresses

Joomla builds each link from the menu item it finds. An article with no menu item of its own or for its category gets a /component/ address, and with Strict Routing off it can also turn up under whichever menu item the visitor came from. Sites carried over from Joomla 3 can keep IDs in their URLs, and index.php stays while URL rewriting is off. Search Console reports them as "Duplicate without user-selected canonical", and Google picks one itself, not always yours.

Illustration: six URLs for one article, merged into one.

A robots.txt from another decade

Joomla writes robots.txt once, at install, and never updates it. The default blocks folders where many extensions keep CSS and JavaScript (SP Page Builder loads its files from /components/com_sppagebuilder/assets/), so search engines may not be allowed to fetch what your pages need. It has no Sitemap line and no rules for AI crawlers.

User-agent: * Disallow: /components/ Disallow: /modules/ Disallow: /plugins/

No canonical tag, or one that copies the mistake

Joomla core prints no canonical tag by default. Fill in Site Domain in the System - SEF plugin and you get one, but it copies the requested path and query string, so every utm, ?limit= and sort-order variant claims to be the original.

<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/news/spring-offer?utm_source=newsletter">

The Joomla 3 upgrade that left 404s behind

Joomla 4 dropped the old router. If the upgrade also changed menus or aliases, addresses that Google and other sites still link to can return 404 (Joomla 5.3 and later redirect an old article ID or alias, but not a menu path that's gone). The System - Redirect plugin would log each one, but it's off by default, so nobody notices until traffic drops.

The same description on page after page

A page without its own meta description gets the global Site Meta Description, so many pages share one sentence, or have none if that field is empty. SP Page Builder leaves the article's intro text empty and keeps a plain-text copy without headings or links, so any extension that writes descriptions automatically, Open Graph ones included, has only that flat text to cut from.

Global Configuration > Site > Metadata Site Meta Description

The same tag printed twice

Templates such as Helix Ultimate, page builders and SEO extensions often print their own canonical, Open Graph and schema tags, and Joomla 5 and 6 add a schema graph on article pages, so two canonicals can end up disagreeing. We pick one owner per tag.

Search and AI crawlers refused by a CDN setting

Since 15 September 2026, choosing Block for AI training in Cloudflare also stops Googlebot, Bingbot and Applebot (Cloudflare's announcement). Its blocks happen at the edge with a 403, so robots.txt can look perfect while the bots never get that far.

robots.txt Allow: / Cloudflare 403 Forbidden

If you can't tell which of these your site has, we'll run a quick audit and show you which ones apply.

What's included

What the Joomla SEO service covers

The Joomla SEO service covers your site's settings, menus, templates and extensions as well as what's written on it, and we make the changes in Joomla ourselves instead of sending you a list.

Technical

Technical SEO for Joomla

We crawl the site the way a search engine does, then fix what we find in Joomla's settings, menus and templates: indexation, routing (IDs out of URLs, one address per article), redirects, robots.txt, XML sitemaps, canonicals, pagination. Multilingual sites get hreflang that matches their associations, with x-default set on purpose.

Articles > Options > Integration > Routing > Remove IDs from URLs

Migration

Joomla 3 to 5 or 6 without losing rankings

Before the move, we build the URL map and the 301 redirects. If you've already upgraded and lost traffic, we collect every address Google knew from Search Console, old sitemaps and inbound links, redirect each one, then watch Search Console for new 404s.

/index.php/news/12-spring-offer 301 → /news/spring-offer

Speed

Speed and Core Web Vitals, from the team behind EasySpeed

Google's Core Web Vitals ask for LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP within 200 milliseconds (INP replaced FID in March 2024) and CLS of 0.1 or less, at the 75th percentile of real visits. We build EasySpeed, a Joomla speed plugin, so this part is done by people who wrote one. Most sites get there without a rebuild: right-sized WebP or AVIF images, lazy loading below the fold only, deferred scripts, caching, and template, SP Page Builder and YOOtheme Pro layout fixes.

Speed is a tie-breaker, though. Google says relevance comes first, and good scores don't guarantee top positions.

Illustration with sample values, not client data.
Schema

Structured data that matches the page

Structured data, usually written as JSON-LD, states plainly who you are, what you offer and where a page sits. Joomla 5 and 6 ship schema plugins, but the fields are typed by hand, the graph appears only on single articles and contacts, and there's no core Service, Product or LocalBusiness type. We add Organization, BreadcrumbList, Service or Product, LocalBusiness where you have premises, and Article, all matching what visitors see.

We won't sell you FAQ rich results, which Google stopped showing on 7 May 2026, or review stars about your own business.

Illustration: JSON-LD for a made-up company, and the breadcrumb trail it can give a search result.

Content and on-page SEO

Titles and meta descriptions written per page instead of the global fallback. Page-builder headings put in order, so the main heading says what the page is about. A 12-week editorial calendar with briefs, 4-6 new or rewritten pages in month 2, refreshes, and hub pages that link to what you sell.

Local SEO

Your name, address and phone number written the same way in the footer module, on the Joomla contact page and in your Google Business Profile. LocalBusiness markup for each place with premises, and location pages that describe the place rather than swap the town name.

Analytics and lead tracking

GA4 and Search Console with events for forms, calls, WhatsApp and sales, so the report counts enquiries, which is what you're paying for.

Links

We review the links pointing at you, clean up the risky ones and disavow only when there's a reason. We don't buy links.

Security checks

A hacked site can get spam pages indexed under its name and a "This site may be hacked" label in Google. We check HTTPS, mixed content, security headers and uptime, and we also clean hacked Joomla sites.

AI search, in the same plan

Generative engine optimisation is part of the monthly plan at no extra cost. It covers which AI crawlers get in and what they can read, and we check whether AI answers cite you. How we handle it.

Joomla AI search optimisation

What generative engine optimisation means for a Joomla site

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the work of getting your pages read and quoted by AI search tools. For Google it's still SEO: Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need nothing beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, and its May 2026 guide says to ignore AI files, "chunking" and special schema.

What we do for AI search

Let the right bots in, one at a time

OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity run separate crawlers for search and for training. Blocking GPTBot tells OpenAI not to train on your pages, and it doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search, which depends on OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI's bot list). Training is your call. We also check Cloudflare, the firewall and the server logs, because a bot refused at the edge never gets as far as robots.txt.

Text that's there without JavaScript

Vercel and MERJ (December 2024) found the main crawlers of OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity didn't run JavaScript. Joomla renders pages on the server, but widgets that fetch their content after the page loads (some sliders, review feeds, filters and page-builder add-ons) leave that text out of the HTML. We put the words that matter back in.

Pages worth quoting

Direct answers near the top, facts with dates and sources, and Organization data that matches the address and phone number on your contact page and Google Business Profile. Bing's webmaster guidelines ask for much the same.

Bing, Copilot and IndexNow

Bing says Copilot runs on the same crawling, indexing and ranking as Bing search, so Copilot visibility starts in Bing's index. We verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, send changed URLs through IndexNow (Google doesn't take part) and read the Copilot citations in Bing's AI Performance report (a preview since February 2026).

Measuring AI referrals and citations

GA4's AI Assistant channel (May 2026) and the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag on ChatGPT's links show AI referrals. Search Console's Generative AI report (31 August 2026) shows impressions only. For the rest, we ask a fixed set of questions in the main AI tools each month and log who gets cited.

We'll add an llms.txt file if you like, but Google Search ignores it, the crawler documentation from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity doesn't mention it, and we won't tell you it does anything. Nobody can promise a citation either, and it's better you hear that now than in month four.

The first 90 days

What happens in the first three months

In month 1 we audit the site and fix what's broken. Month 2 goes on structured data, page-by-page work and 4-6 new pages or posts, and month 3 on internal links, local search and the plan for the next quarter.

  1. 1

    Month 1Audit and quick wins

    • A technical crawl, and a Core Web Vitals audit of your key templates
    • GA4 and Search Console set up or checked, with lead events
    • Critical indexation problems, 404s and redirects fixed
    • robots.txt and sitemaps corrected, AI crawlers set bot by bot
    • The biggest speed wins put live

You getThe Joomla SEO audit and a prioritised backlog, with an estimate and an owner for every task.

  2. 2

    Month 2Implementation and content

    • Structured data rolled out and validated
    • On-page work: titles, descriptions, headings, internal anchors
    • Template and SP Page Builder performance and UX fixes
    • 4-6 optimised pages or posts published from content briefs

You getThe change log, plus what moved in rankings and Core Web Vitals.

  3. 3

    Month 3Authority and refinement

    • Internal linking and hub pages
    • Local SEO, where it applies
    • Risky links cleaned up, and work started on links you can earn
    • Titles and descriptions rewritten where Search Console shows plenty of impressions but few clicks
    • AI answer checks compared against month 1

You getA month-3 report and a roadmap for the next quarter.

Weekly sprints

Each week we take the next items off the backlog, do them, and send you a few lines on what changed and what comes next. If something urgent turns up, a broken redirect after an extension update, say, we can move it up the backlog and tell you what drops down to make room.

Reporting

What the monthly SEO report shows

Once a month you get a short written report that puts the numbers next to the month 1 baseline and says, in plain English, what we changed and what it did.

Most figures come from your own Search Console and GA4, so you can check them yourself.

If you only read one row, read Enquiries. The rest of the report is there to explain it.

Access and safety

How we work on your site

We work on a staging copy first, take a backup before each change and log every one. Every account and every report stays yours.

Staging first

Changes are made and checked on a staging copy, then put live. A robots.txt line gets the same QA as a template override.

A backup before each change

So there's always a known good state to go back to.

A change log you can read

What changed, where, when and why, in words a site owner can follow. If you ever wonder what we did on a Tuesday, it's in there.

The access we need

Admin access to Joomla, the hosting (or a staging copy), GA4 and Search Console. Temporary credentials are fine, and you can switch them off the day we finish.

You own everything

The Joomla site, GA4, Search Console and every report stay in your name, and the documentation is yours when the work ends. Only the rank tracker and the AI answer log run on our side, and their figures go into your report.

Why JoomlaMax

Joomla developers who also do the SEO

JoomlaMax has built Joomla extensions since 2016, which makes us an odd kind of Joomla SEO agency: the fixes happen in Joomla's code and settings, not in a PDF waiting for a developer.

We read the code

Template overrides, extension code, the router. When a page has two canonical tags, we find which extension prints the wrong one and switch it off at the source, rather than adding a third plugin to hide it. We also clean hacked Joomla sites, so we know what a compromised one looks like from the inside.

We build the extensions

EasySpeed for speed and Core Web Vitals, EasySMTP for email, and a Meta Pixel plugin for HikaShop. We also build custom extensions when nothing on the market does the job.

Current tools, and no WordPress pitch

We work with tools maintained for Joomla 4, 5 and 6, not abandoned Joomla 3-era extensions. And we won't push you to WordPress: your Joomla site can rank, and we'll fix it rather than rebuild it.

Measured on our own site

We ran EasySpeed on joomlamax.com: the same page with the plugin off and on, Lighthouse 12 mobile, median of three runs, 28 September 2026. It's our own site and plugin, and a lab test rather than a client result or real-visit data, but it shows what we know about making Joomla fast.

99Performance score, up from 63 (Lighthouse 12, 28 September 2026)
1.9 sLargest Contentful Paint, down from 7.1 s (same runs)
0render-blocking files, down from 7 (same runs)

Limits

What we won't do

We won't promise rankings or AI citations, buy links, churn out AI pages, fake reviews, lock you in or bill work you haven't approved.

  • Guarantee rankings or citations. In Google's words, "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" (Do you need an SEO?), and Bing says GEO "does not guarantee grounding or citations in AI experiences". What you do get is the work in the plan, and numbers taken from your own Search Console and GA4, including the months they go down.
  • Buy links or spam comment sections. Both break Google's spam policies, and you'd be the one paying for the clean-up.
  • Mass-produce pages with AI. Google treats pages churned out at scale to rank as scaled content abuse, whoever or whatever wrote them. We publish fewer pages, each with facts only you could have given us.
  • Fake reviews or star ratings. No invented testimonials and no review markup about your own business.
  • Lock you in. After month 3 it's month-to-month.
  • Bill extra without asking. Work beyond the monthly hours is charged at an hourly rate you approve first.

Pricing

Joomla SEO pricing: $1,499 a month, AI search included

The Joomla SEO service costs USD 1,499 a month, with a three-month minimum and month-to-month after that.

Joomla SEO and GEO plan

$1,499 / month

About $75 an hour of senior time

  • Up to about 20 hours a month of senior SEO and developer time
  • Technical SEO, speed, structured data, content and AI search in one plan
  • Weekly sprints, a monthly report and a change log open all month
  • Extra work only at a pre-approved hourly rate

The minimum is three months, $4,497 in all, because Google has to recrawl a fix before anyone can tell whether it worked. After that you can carry on, pause or move to a lighter monitoring plan, and you keep the documentation either way. If you're comparing this with a cheaper package, ask how many hours of developer time it includes.

Fit

Who this is for, and who it isn't

It suits Joomla sites that earn money and need the fixes made on the site itself. If you're after a quick ranking or a one-off checklist, a monthly plan is the wrong thing to buy.

A good fit if

  • Your Joomla site brings in leads, bookings or sales, and search should bring in more
  • Traffic dropped after an upgrade, a redesign or a move to a page builder
  • You want the work done, and a change log suits you better than a long PDF
  • Someone on your side can answer questions and approve changes

Not a fit if

  • You need a ranking jump before next month's launch
  • You're about to rebuild the site on another CMS anyway
  • You only need one specific fix. That's a smaller job, so ask us about it

FAQ

Questions people ask us before they sign

Answers on timing, Joomla versions, AI search, access and price.

How long before we see results?

Technical fixes tend to show in Search Console within a few weeks of Google recrawling the pages: fewer duplicates and 404s, the right pages indexed. Rankings take longer. In a 2017 video for people hiring an SEO, Google's Maile Ohye said it usually takes four months to a year to make the changes and see a benefit. AI citations vary by tool.

Our site is still on Joomla 3. Can you work on it?

Yes, most of the SEO work can be done on Joomla 3, which W3Techs (October 2026) still counts on 51.9% of Joomla sites. Its extended support ended on 17 February 2025, so new security holes stay open. Before a move to Joomla 5 or 6, we plan the URL map and 301 redirects, so the addresses Google knows keep working.

Should we move to WordPress for better SEO?

Not for SEO. Joomla has search-engine-friendly URLs, metadata per page, built-in multilingual support and, since Joomla 5, schema.org plugins. Rankings are lost through settings, templates and extensions, which can be fixed where they are. A CMS move means a rebuild and a redirect project, and it's when rankings are most at risk.

Do you work with SP Page Builder, Helix Ultimate and YOOtheme Pro?

Yes, and with other templates and page builders. SP Page Builder keeps the layout in its own table and leaves the article's intro text empty, Helix Ultimate can print tags that an SEO extension prints as well, and YOOtheme Pro builds pages in its own builder, so we check what reaches the HTML.

We already use an SEO extension. Why pay for a service?

Keep it, and we'll agree with you which tags it should print. An SEO extension writes titles, tags and sitemaps, but it can't stop a template printing a second canonical, merge duplicate menu routes or make a slow page fast. We build Joomla extensions ourselves, so we know where they stop, and we'd switch a setting off before adding another plugin.

What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?

It's the name for getting a site cited in AI answers: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. Google says that for its own AI features it's still SEO. Beyond that, it means letting the right AI crawlers through robots.txt and Cloudflare, and keeping the important text in the HTML for crawlers that don't run JavaScript. It's included in the monthly price.

Do we need an llms.txt file?

No. It's an optional file, proposed in 2024, that summarises a site for AI tools. Google Search ignores it, and Ahrefs (June 2026) found 97% of llms.txt files received no fetches. If you want one anyway, it's a small job and we'll add it.

Should we block AI bots?

Block training if you want to; don't block search. GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect pages for model training, and Google-Extended covers Gemini training and grounding; OpenAI and Google say blocking these doesn't take you out of ChatGPT search or Google Search. Blocking OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Bingbot largely takes you out of ChatGPT search, Claude, Perplexity or Copilot answers. And since 15 September 2026, Cloudflare's Block option for training also stops Googlebot, Bingbot and Applebot.

Google's AI Overviews took our clicks. Is SEO still worth paying for?

Some of those clicks are gone for good. In Search Console's Performance report, queries where impressions and position held over the last 16 months but clicks fell are most likely losing out to an answer on the results page. The searches that still end in a click are mostly the ones with money behind them, and that's where the hours go.

Can you guarantee rankings or AI citations?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and Bing says GEO doesn't guarantee citations.

What access do you need, and could the work break our site?

Admin access to Joomla, the hosting or a staging copy, GA4 and Search Console; temporary credentials work. Any change can break something, so we make it on staging first, take a backup before it goes live and log it. If something does go wrong, the log shows which change to look at.

Do you write content and build links?

Content, yes: a 12-week editorial calendar with briefs, and 4-6 optimised pages or posts published in month 2. You know your trade better than we do, so we write from your facts and you check each draft. As for links, we clean up the risky ones and look for ones you can earn. We never pay for them.

What's included in $1,499, and what costs extra?

Up to about 20 hours a month of senior SEO and developer time, about $75 an hour. Twenty hours won't fix everything in one month, so the month 1 audit ranks the work by what it's likely to earn and the hours go down that list, AI search included. Extra work is billed at an hourly rate you approve first. After month 3 you can carry on month-to-month, pause or drop to a lighter monitoring plan.

We run a multilingual site, or a HikaShop or VirtueMart shop. Is that different?

A little. Multilingual Joomla needs the Language Filter plugin and associations between translations, because Joomla prints hreflang only for pages that have them. Shops add filter, sorting and pagination parameters and products listed in several categories, which multiply the URLs Google finds, and they need Product markup. Both are in the same monthly plan.
